Teaching: Where Sanity Goes to Die (But You Get Paid in Hugs, Sometimes)

Teaching. Ah, the noble profession. Where you get to shape young minds, inspire future generations, and become a master of creative discipline techniques.

Or, as I like to call it: the daily struggle to maintain a semblance of sanity while surrounded by tiny humans who seem to have a collective goal of testing your limits.

Let’s be honest, teaching is a rollercoaster. One minute you’re basking in the glow of a student’s “aha!” moment, the next you’re deciphering a note written in what appears to be a secret alien language (aka, a teenager’s handwriting).

Here are a few of my favorite “teaching moments”:

  • The “Why?” Epidemic: Kids are naturally curious, which is fantastic! But when every question starts with “Why?” and you find yourself explaining the intricacies of photosynthesis while simultaneously trying to prevent a paper airplane war, you might start questioning your life choices.
  • The “I Forgot” Olympics: Every day is a new competition to see who can come to class with the least amount of supplies. Pencils? Gone. Notebooks? Vanished. Brains? Probably left at home.
  • The “My Dog Ate My Homework” Classic: This excuse is as old as time itself, yet somehow, it still manages to be both hilarious and infuriating.

But amidst the chaos, there are moments of pure joy. The genuine laughter, the unexpected acts of kindness, and the feeling of accomplishment when you see a student truly grasp a difficult concept. These moments make it all worthwhile.

So, to all my fellow teachers out there: you are superheroes. You are warriors. You are the glue that holds society together (or at least, you try to).

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go prepare for tomorrow’s lesson. And by “prepare,” I mean frantically search for the last remaining Sharpie in the abyss that is my desk drawer.

Disclaimer: This blog post is written with humor and a healthy dose of sarcasm. I love my students, truly. Most of the time.

P.S. If you ever find yourself contemplating a career change, I highly recommend becoming a professional cuddler.

I hope you enjoyed this lighthearted take on the teaching profession! Let me know in the comments if you have any other “teaching moments” you’d like to share.
