Samsung’s long-awaited home robot, Ballie, is set to make its debut in the U.S. this summer. After first being introduced in 2020 and showcased at CES 2025, the spherical AI companion is now available for pre-registration on Samsung’s website.
Designed as a rolling personal assistant, Ballie has undergone several upgrades over the years. The latest version includes a built-in projector, speaker, and microphone, allowing it to interact with users in new ways. While it shares some functionality with smart displays—such as controlling connected devices via Samsung SmartThings—Ballie stands out with its advanced AI capabilities.
Gemini AI Brings Smarter Interactions
Samsung has integrated Google’s Gemini AI into Ballie, enhancing its ability to process voice commands, visual data, and environmental inputs. This multimodal reasoning enables the robot to offer personalized suggestions—from fashion advice based on your outfit to wellness tips if you mention feeling tired. According to Samsung, Ballie can even optimize your sleep environment by adjusting smart home settings.
At CES 2025, demonstrations showed Ballie projecting information onto walls, recommending wine pairings, and responding to voice and touchless inputs. However, hands-on testing has been limited so far, leaving some questions about real-world performance.
Can Ballie Succeed Where Others Have Struggled?
Home robots without a clear purpose have historically faced challenges in gaining widespread adoption. Competitors like Amazon’s Astro have struggled, while companies like Apple, Meta, and LG are also exploring the space. Samsung’s biggest rival, LG, introduced a similar rolling robot last year.
With its AI-powered features, Ballie has the potential to stand out—but its success may hinge on pricing and practical utility. As the first major player to announce a summer release, Samsung has an early advantage. The big question remains: Will consumers see Ballie as a must-have smart companion, or just another high-tech novelty?
