Moment Energy Scales Up Battery Repurposing Operations in Coquitlam

Vancouver-based cleantech company Moment Energy has reached a significant milestone, bringing its Coquitlam battery repurposing facility to full-scale production. This achievement follows a $21.6 million Series A funding round, co-led by the Amazon Climate Pledge Fund and Voyager Ventures, aimed at accelerating the company’s mission to transform retired electric vehicle (EV) batteries into advanced battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Over the past six years, Moment Energy has collaborated with major automakers to develop its Luna energy system, which is designed to store energy during off-peak hours and release it during periods of high demand. The company’s BESS technology is highly scalable, ranging from 400 kilowatt hours to 10 megawatt hours, and serves a variety of applications including commercial and industrial operations, EV charging infrastructure, and renewable energy projects.

A portion of the recent funding was used to double the size of Moment’s Vancouver headquarters, enabling the company to ramp up manufacturing and deliver Luna systems across North America. The Coquitlam hub is now recognized as North America’s first UL 1974-certified facility dedicated to repurposing EV batteries at scale, marking a crucial step toward sustainable battery material retention and grid modernization.

Moment Energy also operates a gigafactory in the United States, supported by a US$20 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. This facility is the world’s first purpose-built site for repurposing EV batteries, further solidifying the company’s leadership in the sector.

With the global battery energy storage market projected to exceed $150 billion by 2030, Moment Energy is well-positioned to meet the rising demand for reliable, sustainable power solutions—especially in critical sectors like healthcare and transportation, where uninterrupted energy is essential.

Founded in 2020, Moment Energy continues to drive innovation in battery repurposing, helping to modernize the grid and support the transition to clean energy across North America.
