Clio Acquires vLex in $1 Billion Legal Tech Merger

Vancouver-based legal technology leader Clio has announced a landmark agreement to acquire vLex, a global innovator in legal intelligence and AI-powered research tools, in a deal valued at US$1 billion. The transaction, a mix of cash and stock, marks the most significant acquisition in Clio’s 17-year history and signals a major shift in the legal technology sector.

This strategic move brings together Clio’s widely adopted legal operating system—trusted by more than 200,000 legal professionals worldwide—with vLex’s expansive global legal research database and its advanced AI assistant, Vincent. By uniting these platforms, Clio aims to create a new category of intelligent legal technology that seamlessly blends legal practice management, research, and AI-driven insights into a single, unified system.

Jack Newton, Clio’s CEO and founder, described the acquisition as a “watershed moment” for both Clio and the legal profession. “With vLex, we’re building on our foundation with technology that understands the substance of the law. By bringing together the business and practice of law in a unified platform, we’re revolutionizing every aspect of legal work,” Newton said.

The deal also expands Clio’s global reach, providing legal data coverage across more than 100 countries and unlocking new AI capabilities to help legal professionals manage, research, and execute their work more efficiently. The integration is expected to set a new standard for the industry, empowering law firms of all sizes to deliver greater value to clients with unprecedented precision and insight
